Palm Centro: A broadband smartphone at the price of a standard phone

THE SMARTPHONE market is now shifting to the mass market. IDC, a global market intelligence firm, estimates that U.S. smartphone shipments will grow from 13.8 million in 2007 to 74.4 million in 2011. That would be about 500% growth over a four-year period.

With this prediction in mind, Palm, Inc., a leader in mobile computing (they made the successful Palm Pilot organizers), is now taking their market share in the smartphone industry to a higher level by releasing cheaper smartphones. And this was confirmed when they introduce their new smartphone, the Palm Centro. Palm Centro brings the Palm ease of use trademark to traditional mobile phone users for only $99.99. (Centro will be exclusive through Sprint in the United States for 90 days.)

With a compact fresh design, Centro is the smallest and lightest Palm phone to date. Palm Centro gives you voice, text, IM, email and web. Nothing you didn’t know, actually. Except that it’s all in a phone that’s a lot smaller than you think. Like other smartphones, Centro has a touchscreen and a full keyboard, so you can easily say L8R. Carry names and numbers, shoot photos and video. Again, nothing you didn’t know. So what makes this Palm Centro apart from the rest?

For people thinking of stepping up to a smartphone, Centro would be a good choice since, aside from the stylish compact design, you can have it for an incredibly low price. And since Centro comes with the Palm OS, it offers all of the great organizer functionality that Palm is renowned for.
